New Subject: Homeland Security

Janet, Thanks, You have always been on top of all the available grant money possibilities, Its always money isn't it.

During WW II all naval, commercial and pleasure (fishing) craft/ships, and other waterfront access (shipyards, cargo docks, boat tieups etc.) required a USCG or Military ID, ALL facilities were fenced and guarded, and the same IDs were checked onboard, on vessels leaving and entering port. Now we are At War Again and there is all this Homeland Security money doled out irrespective there is no stated need or purpose at the time. Among Oakland's stated needs are Port Security, ships, containers, waterfront workers etc., good going.

The Berkeley Marina's security needs are quite different from Oakland's, but nonetheless security needs. With all the recent countrywide exposures of flagrant government misuse and abuse of Homeland Security moneys, it would seem making the Marina more secure with the kiosk proposal and car passes, a stated need, might fill the bill nicely. This is just an idea, that there might be someone out there that understands this Homeland Security Money thing and might contact and explain such a proposal to the appropriate City agency. They might see the positive aspects of this, check out the mechanics with their counterpart at the Port of Oakland, if necessary, and take a shot at it. The money involved would certainly be much less than some of the ridiculous boondoggles exposed over the rest of the country. And yes, get Eastshore State Park involved if that seems appropriate, and the some juice from the lessees, DoubleTree for instance? Who knows, this might be a no brainer, and It won't cost the City anything, maybe? cbob
