I just spoke with Susan Ritche the Dock Captain for H&I Docks. She attended
a security meeting yesterday at the Double Tree Hotel. The meeting was
attended by Linda Miao, Marina businesses Police and the City Managers
Office. Susan said that Linda Miao seems genuinely concerned and is willing
to help.
Susan reported that the City was concerned about crime in the Marina and the
loss of our Marina Officer. Here are the proposals currently being worked
on:
* Beginning in September or October the City will be contracting
with Securitas Security Services for a Marina Security Officer. This person
would patrol the Marina seven days a week during the evening hours. The
Security Officer in turn can report suspicious circumstances or crimes to
the Police/Harbormaster. The service would be paid for from the $100k that
was ear marked for the 40 hour per week Police Officer.
* The Police are considering placing an unmarked Police Vehicle in
the Marina. If moved on a regular basis this could deter crime.
* The City is considering closing H'S Lordships Parking Lot after
hours to deter crime, partiers and loitering
* The City is considering video surveillance in the parking lots.
(Probably very expensive and not realistic).
* The City is considering limiting access to the parking lots to
deter crime (i.e.: one way in and out). We have been experimenting with this
in the Berkeley Yacht Club Parking Lot. Crime has been reduced and we are
moving to make this permanent.
In the meantime we should probably think of holding a meeting of the
Berkeley Boat Owners in September. More to follow when I arrange for a
meeting spot.
