I have contacted the Police Department and found the following:
They are currently understaffed by at least ten officers in Patrol Division
and also have another 10 injured officers. They don't have anyone to work
the Marina position and keep the other Beats full.
This week the Chief of Police made the decision to use two Motorcycle
Officers, one Area Coordinator and the Marina Officer to fill Patrol
positions.
Hiring an officer from the time they fill out an application, through the
hiring process, the Police Academy (7 months) and the Field training (18
weeks) is now well over 1 year.
The Marina Officer position is paid for by the Waterfront Budget ($100k a
year as I recall)
The elimination of the Marina Officer does not mean we will not get police
coverage, only that we will not have an officer full time for the Marina
(west of the freeway) 40 hours a week.
The Commissions idea about private security, if worked correctly, could
enhance our security. IE: A roving security officer from 9pm to 7am, seven
days a week instead of four days a week by our Marina Officer. If he sees
crime he could call police and officer would be dispatched.
The security guard would be a deterrent if patrolling in a marked vehicle.
IE: "Berkeley Marina Security Officer".
The Security Guard would cost less than a Police Officer and provide more
coverage.
