[Bboa-members] Waterfront Commission Meeting

Just a few quick comments. Melissa and I attended almost all of last night's
meeting. I left feeling quite satisfied about how the various issues were
being dealt with. The Board struck me as a group of very intelligent people
who are doing their best to treat all parties fairly. I was particularly
pleased to see one of the members making a serious effort to look at the big
picture in getting our financial house in order - treating the whole marina
enterprise as the proper business it should be. Why this wasn't done years
ago is certainly a mystery.
The comments/questions taken from the audience were full of valuable
information and seemed appreciated by the Board. The more us boaters can add
in the future in this regard can only be a good thing.
I think that a couple of Paul's comments about houseboaters in today's email
were a bit unfair. If the docks they have been using were not designed to
withstand the extra loads generated by the windage of the large structures,
the marina never should have allowed them to come in. Unlike the rest of us
boat owners, the houseboaters are in a very vulnerable position. If Melissa
and I were to feel that the facilities supporting our boat are no longer
adequate, we could very easily untie our lines and move to another marina.
This is obviously not the case with houseboats. The marina owes it to them
to provide proper docks and services to support their homes. FWIW, I also
like seeing the houseboats in the marina and believe they add a certain
value and character to all our lives here.

We all recognize that docks H and I are in poor condition.
But I have to wonder about your cleat pull-outs, Janet.
Those docks were designed for boats having maybe one tenth
the crosswind "sail area" of a large floating home, and in
your case, didn't you just make your entire boat one deck
higher?
I think when a large high-windage box of a floating home
is put into a space designed for a yacht, some burden of
responsibility falls on the floating home owner to upgrade
the attachment points at their own expense.
Is it really fair to the entire community of Berkeley boat
berthers for the City to have to go the expense of putting
in extra pilings just to hold your oversized floating home
in place?
