[Bboa-members] K Dock

At times, the bait receiver is cleaned out at the end of K-dock when the little fish die off..common practice, but this is not been the problem with the sea lion. I have no reports of "Buddhist Monks" releasing bait in the marina to feed the sea lion. That's a good one.

As far as the sea lion goes, he bit 1 (one) (uno) person. Thought she had a fish. Next day the media is all over this with vicious sea lion attacks 3 people!!! What a Crock. One particular crew"boy" thought it was real fun to tease the sea lion, making him jump up next to the dock and hitting him on the head for a while before the sea lion bit this lady..of course many reported this to us AFTER the biting incident. It is true that the sea lion would take fish off the dock, but he didn't bite 2, or 3 people. Just one. And it was unfortunate.

We locked K-dock to the public with the exception of fishing customers and we put into place a no- fish-cleaning policy on the dock until further notice. The Capt.'s of the fishing fleet have been cooperative amongst the growling and whining of their crews.
A 600lb sea lion is not going to be caught and relocated. Marine Mammal Center Tried to catch him, but catching a healthy sea lion is not something they nor NOAA (Marine Mammal Law Enforcement) wants to do. This animal was trained by foolish, childish (no regard for the rules or laws in place to protect animals or people) idiots. now we're going to un-train him by making it less interesting to come into the harbor. Takes time and patience. MMC also stated that mating season is soon, so we're hoping he just leaves. That's all that can be done right now.
Incidentally, shooting or killing the sea lion in Berkeley (was discussed as a last resort) is NOT an option. The fishermen would loose their right to do business here. Would be the death of Party boat operations.

Thanks for letting me know the scuttlebutt..

Have a good monday all.

Ann

Speaking as a former Buddhist and current animal lover, if
you reward aggressive behavior you're only asking for an
increase in that kind of behavior. Sounds like the right
thing to do is to relocate this sea lion far enough away
that it won't find its way back here again.
