Paul Kamen here, this time wearing one of my other hats as a member of the Berkeley Racing Canoe Center.
You have all probably seen the BRCC dragon boats practicing or giving rides to school groups in the marina. These are the 48 ft replicas of ancient Chinese river boats, propelled by 20 paddlers. Boats like these have been raced in China since at least 278 BC.
Bay Area Dragons and BRCC are sponsoring a race event in August for corporate, municipal and novice teams, and we think a Berkeley Marina Boat Owners team would be a great addition to the mix.
The racing will be in Foster City in August, but most of these novice teams only train for three of four sessions before competing.
Let me know if there is interest in this, or drop in on a regular team practice session to check it out. M-dock, 6:00-7:00 PM Monday-Wednesday-Thursday, or 10:30-12:30 Saturday mornings. More info on BRCC is at http://www.BerkeleyRCC.org.
